SiLC Professionals Join Expert Line-Up for SoBRA and RSC Contaminated Land Conference

Members of the SiLC community will be among the industry specialists sharing their knowledge at the Joint SoBRA / RSC December 2026 Conference: Current Issues in Contaminated Land Risk Assessment, taking place on Tuesday 8th December 2026 at the Royal Society of Chemistry, Burlington House, London.

Available to attend both in person and online, the conference brings together practitioners, regulators, researchers and technical specialists to explore current and emerging issues influencing contaminated land risk assessment.

SiLC is pleased to see professionals from the SiLC community represented within a wide-ranging technical programme, demonstrating the depth of expertise and knowledge that SiLCs contribute to the contaminated land sector.

A packed programme of current industry issues

The conference will cover a diverse range of topics across contaminated land risk assessment, starting with updates from the Environment Agency, the National Contaminated Land Officers Group (NCLOG) and the Scottish Government.

Technical presentations throughout the day will then explore subjects including subsurface heterogeneity and AI-driven environmental decision-making, conceptual site models, lead exposure, PFAS management, groundwater risk assessment and remediation.

Among the presentations is “The Conflicting Aims of Risk Assessment in a Game of Policy Top Trumps” from Liz Hart of Hart Environmental.

Using a live case study, the session will consider the interaction between risk-based assessment for land contamination under the planning system and risk-based assessment associated with environmental permitting, exploring how the different policy objectives can complement or conflict with one another when redeveloping a former landfill.

The afternoon programme will also tackle one of the most prominent emerging challenges for the contaminated land sector: PFAS.

Andrew Fellows and Rebecca Bartlett of RSK will present “Practical PFAS Management: Sustainable Development of a Former Airfield”, examining the practical management of PFAS risk on a large residential development. The case study will consider how site investigation, conceptualisation, quantitative risk assessment and engagement with regulators can support sustainable development.

Collaboration and knowledge sharing

Alongside the technical presentations, the conference provides opportunities for discussion and Q&A, giving attendees the chance to engage with speakers and explore some of the challenges currently facing practitioners.

SoBRA subgroup representatives will also provide updates covering Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPL), Ground Gases, Vapour Intrusion and Risk, Bioaccessibility and Early Careers.

For SiLCs, and for other professionals working across contaminated land, brownfield development, risk assessment and remediation, the conference offers an opportunity to hear current technical thinking from across the sector while supporting ongoing professional development.

It is particularly positive to see SiLC professionals contributing to these wider industry discussions and sharing their experience with practitioners from across the contaminated land community.
