VIEW | ‘Regulation makes reuse of excavated materials hard, but there are opportunities to change this’

Current regulatory requirements in England and Wales mean that many excavated materials are classified as waste, placing hurdles in the way of reuse, as opposed to disposal to landfill.

RSK Geosciences director and SiLC (Specialist in Land Condition Register Ltd) chair-elect Dr. Tom Henman argues that this is a barrier to sustainable development and pathways to net zero, as well as a waste of an important resource. This also forms the subject of a session at GE Sustainability.
